Eddie McGrady MPIt is a pleasure to be asked to make a contribution to Down Hockey Club’s centenary magazine.

Celebrating 100 years of hockey in Downpatrick is a fine achievement and the fact the club is still going strong today is testament to the hard work of its office-bearers and the enthusiasm of its players, over the past century.

The club I believe played its first games at Saul Camp and the sport has grown and matured and Down Hockey Club has enjoyed its fair share of success over the years.

Down has been fortunate to be able to rely on many dedicated people over the past century to keep it going and I wish the club continued success in the new millennium and hope that in 2100, it will be celebrating another milestone.

Indeed, I note that my namesake, E. K. an uncle, was a member of the club during the 1930s and was elected vice-chairman.

The Downpatrick club owns its own ground, which sits in an idyllic setting off the Strangford Road, and the players and officials should feel proud the club is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Hockey is a sport which uniquely combines athleticism, skill, fitness and power with the social side of things and no doubt there have been highs and lows down through the years.

There have been moments of sadness, drama and triumph. Players and officials have benefitted from their association within the club.

Over the years the faces have changed, but the friendships started at the club have been cemented and remain long after playing days are over.

I wish continued success to Down Hockey Club and may the players of today continue to get as much enjoyment as their predecessors when they stepped out for the first game in October, 1900.
